Plain Dealing Middle/High School selected as Model High School

Plain Dealing Middle/High School has been selected as one of 23 model high schools for 2008 by the International Center for Leadership in Education. The chosen schools will share their best practices at the 16th Annual Model Schools Conference, June 22-25 in Orlando. The Model Schools Conference is the nation’s premier event for K-12 education reform.

Each year, the Conference attracts thousands of educators, who come to learn about exemplary elementary, middle, high schools and career and technical education programs. Model schools are selected annually based on providing all students with a rigorous and relevant curriculum, personalized instruction, increased student learning time, parent and community involvement, use of data to make instructional decisions, and other best practices. Case studies prepared by the International Center on Plain Dealing Middle/High School and the other model high schools serve as a resource for educators and policymakers.

“We are delighted that this exceptional school will be sharing its best practices, which mirror the International Center’s mission of providing a rigorous and relevant education for all students,” said Willard R. Daggett, President of the International Center.

As a model school, Plain Dealing Middle/High School will become a member of the Successful Practices Network. Through the Network, Plain Dealing’s professional staff will exchange best instructional practices, successful methodologies, and peer support with other member schools.

PDHS will field a Technology Team that will compete in the first Technology Challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to recognize and reward students for creativity and technical skills. Our team includes Brittany Broom, Tim Saunders, Merkela Dupree, Lavell Bratton, Umeko Fuller, Stefvan Harris, Dusty Swearingen, Felisha Wade, Kathy Green, Amber Stumon, Eureka Taylor, and Samonya Harris. We wish them good luck.

Congratulations to the staff and students of PDHS for an outstanding job on LEAP/GEE from spring 2006. Our high school scores rose by 9.4 points giving us exemplary growth as recognized by the state department of education. In middle school we had the smallest number of failures since the current testing program began. We hope to continue to grow and get better each year.

PDMS 8th graders recently received scores from the EXPLORE test that was administered earlier in the school year. The purpose of the test is to let students know how well they perform against their peers. It is also an indicator of how well they are prepared for such tests as the ACT and LEAP. Several of our students did an outstanding job. Alexciya Green scored better than 94% of her peers in Reading and her composite score was 85% higher. Chantel Kinsey scored better than 93% of her peers in English and 85 % on composite score. Brittany Stanfield scored higher than 84% in Science.
Congratulations to our eighth grade Lady Lions basketball team for winning the Bossier Parish championship this season. Alexia Green, Artrail Johnson, Ty’Keidra Chambers, Salmeshia Gladney, DeAngela Perry, Cherrika Lee, and Jye’Mekecia Scott completed the season without a loss. The seventh grade team finished second in the league with only two losses. Coach Cole and Mrs. Powell did a great job working with both teams.

As we enter the third nine weeks of the school year, our staff and students are working diligently to build skills and prepare for spring testing. We are pleased to announce that we have installed our new marquee sign and will be posting messages for the community soon. A big thanks goes out to all of our parents whose support during fundraisers made the sign possible.

Our computer lab is up and running. Many of your children may have already told you about some of the projects they will be working on during the year. We have also set up Classroom Performance Systems in Kindergarten and first grade classrooms. We hope these will be a great asset to our students.
Our school has received new playground equipment from Title I which our students are enjoying.

Our counselor, Ms Judy Todd, held her first parent meeting of the year with first grade parents. The parents reviewing expectations for the classroom, participated in a make and take session, and put together a parent packet kit of resources to review at home. It was a successful meeting for all. Interested parents should watch the school calendar for their child’s grade level meeting. Each month will feature a different grade. Shown above are two of the parents who attended.
